We want to know: Are you picking up pickleball?
Are you taking up one of America's fastest-growing sports?
April is National Pickleball Month, a fitting status for what has become one of the fastest-growing sports in America.
A recent study from the Sports and Fitness Industry Association found that the game, a cross between ping-pong, badminton, and tennis, has nearly 5 million players — and it’s likely to grow. The game that was mostly played in retirement communities is now appealing to younger generations, according to USA Pickleball.
“Pickleball is an extremely approachable sport,” said Brian Weller, part owner of PKL Boston. “You can take it as seriously as you want and still have an absolute blast playing. Pickleball is a melting pot for all ages, genders, and levels of athleticism.”
The sport is making its way to Greater Boston as a growing number of courts and leagues give players more places to try out the once niche sport.
Pickleball courts are popping up at public parks and at pay-to-play venues like private clubs or entertainment spaces. PKL Boston, which opened as a pop-up space in Assembly Row last summer, plans to open its first location in South Boston next month.
“We wanted to create a space where the community comes together and has a fantastic time,” Weller said.
We want to know if you’ll be joining the craze. Are you picking up a paddle and taking part in the pickleball phenomenon? Have you played before and want to recommend your favorite places to play?
