Boston commuters will put up with a lot. Delays, crowded platforms, sudden service issues. But one recent Reddit post suggests there may be another daily frustration worthy of its own category: the city’s most annoying escalator.
In a post on Reddit’s Boston page, one user singled out the up escalator from the Prudential skybridge into Copley Place as the city’s most annoying. The user wrote that it is out of service “about 75% of the time,” despite being a key path for commuters trying to reach Back Bay Station. Dozens of commenters soon jumped in with competing nominees.
Many commenters pointed to the long escalators at Porter Square, with several saying they “definitely” outrank the one at Copley Place.
“The Porter Square (middle) escalators would like a word,” one commenter wrote.
Others nominated escalators at Courthouse Station, South Station, North Station, and Logan Airport’s Terminal C, turning the thread into an unofficial ranking of the area’s most frustrating escalators.
A few commenters joked that a broken escalator is still technically a staircase. Others were less amused, saying repeated outages can slow foot traffic, complicate commutes, and create added difficulties for people with chronic pain, mobility issues, luggage, or steep stairs to navigate.
So now we want to hear from readers: Is the Prudential-to-Copley Place escalator really Boston’s most annoying, or is another escalator more deserving of the title?
