After four days of deliberations, jurors found Karen Read not guilty of murder in the retrial case, but guilty of an OUI charge.
Read, 45, was found not guilty on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence, and leaving the scene of a fatal collision. Read had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
However, Read’s operating under the influence manslaughter charge also carried lesser offenses including offenses of involuntary manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and operating under the influence of liquor. She was found guilty of the OUI offense, and a clerk said she would be sentenced to one year of probation.
All charges against Read for either conviction or acquittal required a unanimous verdict from the 12 jurors.
Deliberations for Read’s retrial began on Friday, June 13, after jurors were presented with two vastly different theories of what happened to Read’s boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe on Jan 29, 2022. Prosecutors allege Read backed her car into O’Keefe after a drunken night out, while her lawyers argue she was framed.
Prior to the verdict, some experts told Boston.com’s Abby Patkin they predicted a “not guilty” verdict on the murder charge, while others said there was a “substantial likelihood” of another mistrial.
We want to know your reactions to the verdict, as the yearlong case – and controversy – comes to a close.
