Jerod Mayo’s tenure as the head coach of the New England Patriots has come to an end after just one year with the team.
The team announced that Mayo was fired on Sunday, shortly after the 2024 season ended with a 23-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills. Despite the win, the Patriots ended the year with a dismal 4-13 record, marking one of the franchise’s worst seasons in recent history.
Robert Kraft, the owner of the Patriots, expressed his disappointment in the team’s performance and offered a public apology to the fanbase.
“We have tremendous fans who expect and deserve a better product than we have delivered in recent years. I apologize for that,” Kraft said in a statement released on X.
“I have given much thought and consideration as to what actions I can take to expedite our return to championship contention and determined this move was the best option at this time,” he added.

Indeed, when we asked readers if Mayo should step down from his position, three-quarters of more than 500 who responded gave a resounding “yes.”
“Instead of pulling the Pats out of a nosedive, Mayo steered them into a death spiral,” reader Eddy D. from Maynard said.
With Mayo’s departure, the Patriots now find themselves searching for a new leader to guide the team back to its former glory.
Several high-profile coaching candidates have already emerged as potential successors. Among them is Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots linebacker who won three Super Bowls with the franchise and was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2021.
According to CBS Sports’s Aditi Kinkhabwala, Vrabel interviewed for the Jets’ head coaching job last week in order to ‘put pressure on the Patriots to make a move.’
Additionally, Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, is another name that could be in the mix. The Patriots have reportedly requested permission to interview Johnson about the vacancy left by Mayo, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
