On Sept. 15, Latinx performers are bringing Central and South America to Boston’s City Hall Plaza for Fiesta en la Plaza to kick-off Hispanic Heritage Month.
Lasting from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the contributions of Latin Americans to the arts, education, and more across the world. Producing and curating Fiesta en la Plaza, arts organization Ágora Cultural Architects have planned a host of free events throughout September including salsa lessons, documentary screenings, and an arts and culture panel.
The month coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua which all declared their independence from Spain on Sept. 15, 1821. Other Central and South American countries followed suit, declaring their independence from European colonial powers during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Making up 20% of the city’s population, Boston’s Latin American communities continue to make impactful contributions to the cultural fabric of the area as a whole. Celebrating these contributions can be done during this month and beyond by supporting these communities in other ways.
