From sweet lattes to a tastefully bitter cold brew, the amount of coffee drink options on the market are able to appease anyone’s tastes.
A study from Coffeeness found that Massachusetts’ favorite coffee drink was a latte and Boston’s was a macchiato, results that probably made espresso lovers unite.
In the spirit of this study, we asked readers for their favorite coffee drink, and the answer from nearly 100 readers was not too surprising.
Nothing too fancy is required to get a kick of caffeine — black coffee, iced coffee, and a “regular” coffee all tied for first place in our poll.
“I don’t need any added flavors. Just give me a mug of real coffee with a little sugar and some half and half,” said Joseph Z. from Boston about regular coffee.
In Massachusetts, winter isn’t exclusively for hot drinks. When you’re roaming the streets, it’s likely you’ll see multiple people holding a medium iced coffee in their hands, no matter the temperature.
“It’s perfect year round!” Lynn from Lakeville said about iced coffee. “Cools me down on hot days and reminds me that the heat will come back on cold days when I’m holding it in my gloved hands.”
When it comes to coffee, Bostonians are nothing if not consistent: In 2022, iced coffee topped the vote for coffee orders, and regular coffee was crowned the number one order for Bostonians.
“Large regular. Nowhere else do they know what ‘regular’ means — even Dunkin’ in other states,” Anne C. from Norfolk said in 2022.
This year, readers praised black coffee, a drink that C from Roslindale said is “un-eff-uppable,” for its taste and simplicity.
“When you get high-quality beans and an expert barista to brew up a pour over, the unique characteristics and flavors of that coffee really shine, nothing else needed,” said Jon from Belmont. “It’s really cool to think of all the people that helped bring that amazing cup of black coffee to me, from the farmers in their corner of the world, to the roasters, to the coffee shop employees.”
For readers who prefer that espresso shot in their drink, favorites included Americanos, cortados, and flat whites.
“It’s the perfect balance of espresso and milk. A cortado with a good espresso is hard to beat,” said Patrick from Watertown.
Recently, readers also recommended their favorite coffee shops in the Boston area and beyond. Among the top three reader-recommended locations, George Howell Coffee, Thinking Cup, and, of course, Dunkin’ came out on top. Massachusetts does “run on it,” according to reader Matt from Canton.
Dunkin’s DunKings Iced Coffee, flavored with vanilla and a sweet cold foam, also came recommended by Jason M. from Malden.
“Because Ben Affleck told me to drink it,” he said.
