"Christmas on the beach is a real treat."
Holidays are a memorable time of year — especially when a suitcase and passport are involved.
When we asked Boston.com readers if they have vacationed over the holidays, we received stories of lounging on the beach at Christmas and enjoying less crowded and less expensive destinations.
About 47% of holiday travelers will hit the road this year and about 18% will travel internationally, with Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean as trending international destinations, according to Travel + Leisure.

1. Bermuda
“We got a vacation deal in Bermuda. Didn’t plan on going to church, but the piano player at the resort took us to a wonderful Christmas service,” wrote Rich S. from Belmont.
2. Caribbean cruise
“Last year we took a Caribbean cruise during the week of Christmas. This year we are going to Florida,” wrote Alyssa from Norwood.
3. Costa Rica
“I went to Costa Rica after leaving a stressful job situation and was there over Thanksgiving. A few Americans were around, but overall a great way to chill — particularly since it was their shoulder season, i.e., it wasn’t crazy busy for the tourist industry in Costa Rica yet,” wrote Mike M. from Williamstown.
4. Europe
“Europe over thanksgiving weekend — perfect!! Airport terminal empty as it’s international and perfect temps to visit! Highly recommend,” wrote FMS from Holliston.
5. Hawaii
“We have traveled to Hawaii to have a tropical Christmas. Christmas on the beach is a real treat. We have also traveled to Australia to spend Christmas and New Years with friends. Time for another tropical Christmas,” wrote Elizabeth from Littleton.
There are many ways to enjoy Thanksgiving holidays in Hawaii, but Road to Hana [was] most definitely [the] drive of a lifetime! Some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty you’ll ever see is found on this road. I’m glad we did it!” wrote Chris L. from Massachusetts.
6. Punta Cana
“We started during Covid with our 2 adult children and my mom. My wife’s side is very large and by [Covid] rules we could not get together. This Christmas will mark our 4th year in Punta Cana for the holidays,” wrote James G. from Taunton.
7. St. Thomas
“Growing up we spent Christmas vacation on St. Thomas. We used to swim at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Looking back at it, probably not the smartest thing swimming at night while sharks are feeding. I still have 10 fingers and toes so it all worked out in the end,” wrote Scott from Burlington.
8. Thailand
“I went to Koh Samui, Thailand over Christmas one year. Just prior to Christmas is the end of their rainy season, so prices are still low (comparatively) and despite being a Buddhist country the island has a large expat population so it still gets a festive Christmas-y vibe (think Christmas trees made up of coconut shells),” wrote Leslie from Swampscott.
