Spring arrives on Thursday but, typical for New England, the weather may or may not comply.
Therefore, we asked readers when it feels like spring for them, regardless of the date, and most who answered our informal poll said the day of the Boston Marathon. This year it’s on April 21.
Ahead, find out when readers feel like spring has finally arrived in New England.
For Elle from Boston it is Daylight Savings (March 9).
“It just is! Back in the day when it was April, that was spring. Now it’s March. That’s just how it is in Mass.,” she wrote.
For Joseph Z. from Boston, it’s when the Red Sox take the field at Fenway Park (April 4).
“The Red Sox return has always signaled the end of winter, even if there is a little snow left to come,” he wrote.
For Joelyn L. of Westford, it has to do with a deciduous shrub.
“For 56 years my mother announced ‘Forsythia is in bloom!’ Every. Year. A major announcement each spring!!” she wrote.

For Patrick B. of Scituate it is the Masters Tournament (April 10-13).
“I used to watch with my dad (before he passed) and it just always seemed to indicate better days to come,” he wrote. “The tournament typically finishes while the sun is still up too — a change from the first 3 months of golf. Tells me Spring’s here!”
For a reader who identified as “Snow Birds” from Brookline, it is travel.
“Whenever my husband and I flew back from our extended winter vacation in Broward County, Florida, usually in March of each year,” the reader wrote.
And for Liz. Z. from Jamaica Plain, it has to do with birds.
“All the birds perk up 2/1 but when the call of the red-winged blackbird is heard that is true Spring — they are here to nest!” she wrote.
Responses lightly edited for clarity.
