After Conde Nast Traveler named Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine among the best places to propose marriage worldwide, we asked Boston.com readers where they got engaged and they shared romantic stories from New England and beyond.

Carol C. from Scarborough, Maine actually got engaged at Portland Head Light. Her future husband, a native of Cape Elizabeth, popped the question at the scenic spot and they married two years later.

Ahead, 11 more readers share where they got engaged.

“[Forty-one] years ago (September 1983), we were on a planned holiday in Acadia National Park. One night, we drove to the top of Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunset. He asked the question as the sun was setting.” — Emily M. from Chelmsford

“Caracol Falls near Canela, Brazil” — Beth G. from North Easton

“He proposed in the kitchen of his basement apartment in Waltham. The flowers were half dead from being carried through a snowstorm. The ring was small but perfect. Not a proposal that would earn many likes on social media, but the marriage has lasted over two decades and is still going strong.” — Vanessa from Southie

“The top of Mt. Washington.” — Karen from Newton

“A quiet gazebo at the end of a beach in St. John USVI. We ran into it when it started raining while we were out for a sunset walk on the beach. I didn’t know that my now husband had bought a ring, never mind had it in his pocket, when we ran for cover. It was just us, a rainbow appeared over the water, and I guess he took that as his sign.” — BW from Rhode Island

Jefferson Memorial in D.C with cherry blossom trees in full bloom” — Joe from Winchester

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. We took the T. I was completely surprised. We have a lovely photo of him kneeling in front of me with the luxurious garden in the back. You wouldn’t know it was Boston in January. Such a lovely spot.” — Victoria R. from Somerville

“It all started with a spontaneous kiss in front of the Steamship Authority terminal in Oak Bluffs. He proposed in the very same place, and I’m quite sure we made a spectacle of ourselves — especially considering it’s a second marriage for us both!” — Nora from Vineyard Haven

“Outside the [New England] Aquarium at the sea lions — one of our favorite spots. [Twelve] years ago my husband took me on a long run through all our [favorite] Boston spots (we are runners!) and 10 miles later we finished at the aquarium. He showed me the route on his phone — it spelled ‘marry me?'” — Joanie from Maine, formerly of Medford

“My now husband proposed at dinner in a Bertucci’s one town away from where we lived (lived in Quincy at the time, Bertucci’s was in Braintree). I know that doesn’t sound particularly romantic. But for me, it was never about where. It was just about the fact that I was in love with him and he with me and we wanted to be married. That was 24 years ago and we are still together and just as much in love now as we were then.” — Tammy R. from Framingham

“Happened at our family lake house with lots of our family and friends around. While out on our boat for a weekend sunset cruise. It was perfect.” — Kiki from the North Shore
