In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Reilly (Zlab) Martin
Age: 31
From: Portland, Oregon

I was honored and excited to be selected for the 2020 Massachusetts General Hospital Marathon Team. I’d signed up to run on behalf of a MGH patient that is now in remission, Clara Gordon, who is the daughter of a dear friend of mine.

The staff, activities such as art therapy and field trips, and much more were such bright spots to them in such a trying time. I was glad to be giving back a fraction to MGH/the pediatric cancer unit that you all gave to my friend.

However, little did I anticipate back then how much I would come to appreciate the MGH community and spirit you all bring to patients, their families, and the general community in Boston and worldwide.

My run this year will once again be dedicated to Clara, but also to all the great work hospital- and unit-wide.

I ran the virtual 124th marathon for MGH in 2020, which was special in its own way, but I’m excited at the idea of crossing the “official” finish line while representing MGH.
