In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Kara Niewohner
Age: 44
From: Portsmouth, R.I.

I started running in 2016 with a group of moms in Northern Virginia. Dozens of races later I found myself facing a breast cancer diagnosis in April 2021.

I vowed to stay active and run throughout my treatment, which included chemotherapy and a double mastectomy in September 2021.

Just before my diagnosis in April 2021, I had registered to run Boston’s first ever offering of a virtual marathon for 2021. I was unsure if I would still be able to go the distance just 4 short weeks after my double mastectomy.

But, I did it! I ran all 26.2 miles on October 10 finishing my fifth full marathon, but my first full marathon after kicking cancer to the curb.

This year I am running the Boston Marathon for real, for Dana-Farber!
