As a first responder, the past year has been difficult. Daily, I witness first-hand the negative effects the COVID-19 pandemic has on children and families: unemployment, homelessness, developmental delays, and a rise in crime.
As a police officer, I often feel helpless due to the lack of resources for families dealing with these hardships caused by the pandemic. We respond to constant calls that are a direct result of this. It is disheartening when you think about all the families that were already dealing with such obstacles. The pandemic greatly exacerbated the struggles these families confront, particularly families supporting a child with a chronic illness.
The Miles for Miracles team at Boston Children’s Hospital has always contributed to work supporting children and families of the hospital, but it felt more necessary than ever to join this team. After three prior races, I knew the work they do at BCH was invaluable during this difficult time.
I will continue to run with this team across the 125th Boston finish line and beyond “until every child is well.”
