In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your #WhyImRunningBoston story here.
Name: Anthony Pappalardo
Age: 43
From: Melrose
Back in Dec 2009, I was involved in a very serious car accident. I suffered 18 broken bones with seven being compound fractures, spent over three months in a wheelchair, and suffered a traumatic brain injury. I was airlifted from the scene, spent a month at Maine Medical Center, and was then transported to Spaulding Rehab in Boston.
While at Spaulding, I made tremendous progress and was able to return to work after only four months. Since this terrible time in my life over a decade ago, I have married my wife, had two children, completed grad school, and received my CPA license. None of this could have been possible without the incredible work done at Spaulding during my time there, both inpatient and outpatient.
I am running the Boston Marathon this year to help out others in a similar situation, in hopes that they can have the same type of recovery and begin their lives again. The staff at Spaulding are second to none and deserve so much recognition for all of the amazing work that they do on a daily basis.
