Earlier this week, New York City announced that it would begin requiring proof of vaccination at indoor businesses, including restaurants and bars, gyms, and performance venues, starting on Sept. 13, making it the first major city to have such a mandate. Now many are wondering if such requirements will be announced in other cities, including Massachusetts.

Despite a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases and growing concerns about the Delta variant and breakthrough cases among the fully vaccinated, Gov. Charlie Baker has yet to implement a proof of vaccination mandate. Baker said in late July that his administration had no plans to change the existing COVID-19 rules and policies.

While Acting Boston Mayor Kim Janey will reinstate a mask mandate for all Boston Public Schools this fall, she said on Tuesday that the city has no plans to require the COVID-19 vaccine for workers and customers at local restaurants, gyms, and other indoor venues.

Some local businesses are taking matters into their own hands, however, by adding their own vaccine mandates. The Quiet Few, a bar in East Boston, is among those requiring that patrons show proof of vaccination.

“To work, we need to ensure our safety,” wrote owner Joshua Weinstein in an Instagram post announcing the bar’s new policy. “It is not a fair ask of the bar/restaurant industry to just put masks back on. We tried that. Throw that on top of our industry being short staffed and exhausting extra hours, it’s not our place to make more concessions. We did that. For over 15 months.”

We want to know if you would support vaccination requirements for indoor spaces like restaurants, gyms, and other venues. Do you think there should be statewide vaccination requirements or is there a better way to handle the ongoing pandemic? If a requirement is implemented, will you have your vaccination card ready or will you be opting out of indoor spaces?
