Boston skies fill with haze, smoke, and ash this week from wildfires raging thousands of miles away from western United States and Canada. The air quality alert remains in place for parts of Massachusetts through Monday as air patterns push the wildfire smoke north.

The nation’s largest wildfire, Oregon’s Bootleg Fire, grew to 618 square miles — just over half the size of Rhode Island on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Fires continue to burn in other areas of the West and in Canada.

Massachusetts officials said the air quality across the state is expected be unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as people with heart or lung diseases, people with asthma, older adults, children, teenagers, and people who are active outdoors.
