Asking Bostonians about their pizza opinions can get heated, so much so that more than 74,000 respondents let their voices be heard when asked what they consider to be the best pizza in Greater Boston. Now, we have a winner.
Per the bracket results, Ziggy’s in Brighton earns the crown, defeating Boston pizza bigwigs like Regina Pizzeria and Santarpio’s.
Open since 2021, the Oak Square pizzeria is run by three brothers: Harry, Nicholas, and Stephen. The latter, also the oldest brother, was inspired to open a pizzeria after the trio watched their father run Oak Square Pizza, from 1980 to 2000 in the same location.
“We grew up in the pizza business,” said Harry, who noted that when the building once again became available in 2020, the brothers jumped at the chance to bring their own pizzeria to Brighton.
It’s different from their father’s former restaurant in that they moved away from the Greek-style pan pizza. At Ziggy’s, you’ll find pizza similar to New York-style — thin and crispy, and there are several options available by the slice.
“We’re Greek, but we’ll admit Italian-style is better,” Harry said.
Customers can also choose between simple cheese and pepperoni slices, or go for a more unique pie, like pizza with a balsamic glaze base or topped like a chicken parm sub. Like most pizzerias, a large part of their business is takeout.
The Brighton newcomer’s win could be considered an upset, considering Ziggy’s went head-to-head with Dragon Pizza, Pino’s Pizza, Santarpio’s Pizza, Sally’s Apizza, before finally defeating Stoked Pizza Co. in the final round.
Harry said the brothers and their employees had been pushing out the bracket as much as possible to customers, through their own social media, with the help of Brighton Main Streets, and support from family.
“People I hadn’t talked to in years texted me ‘Don’t worry, we’re voting today,” Harry said. “Family in Greece who’ve had our pizza told me ‘We’re voting from Greece.’”
If you find yourself at Ziggy’s for the first time, here’s what Harry recommends to order:
