Waltham High School students hoping to work in cosmetology now have a new place to practice their craft.

The high school recently opened a new classroom and working salon designed for students studying hair, skin, and nail care, WBZ NewsRadio reported. The space includes 25 stations and allows students to work with public clients, giving them hands-on experience in a real salon setting.

“It’s amazing. It’s like working in a high-end salon,” cosmetology instructor Jackie Powers told WBZ. “I’ve never seen anything like this in a school, and we’ve been so lucky. Waltham provided top-of-the-line everything.”

According to the City of Waltham, the salon soft opened on March 20 with limited services open to the public.

According to WBZ, students can graduate with 1,000 hours of training, then take the state licensing exam to begin working professionally.

That real-world element is part of what makes the new salon feel so significant for students. Junior Giselle told WBZ that while students have mostly worked on family members, friends, and teachers, serving members of the public makes the work feel “10 times more real.”

All services are performed by Waltham High cosmetology students with instructor supervision. Appointments are required and can be booked by emailing [email protected] or calling 781-614-3925.
