Why I’m Running: ‘I am keeping his spirit alive’

"Grief can take many forms, but I knew I needed a creative and positive outlet for mine."

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Erin Abraham
Age: 39
From: Portland, Maine

On March 24, 2023 I got the very worst phone call. My little brother had taken his life. Nothing can prepare you for this kind of grief. And grief can take many forms, but I knew I needed a creative and positive outlet for mine. By doing fundraising projects and events that feel meaningful, I am keeping his spirit alive, and helping others in need. So I am running the Boston Marathon for the Samaritans, for suicide prevention, in honor of my bro, Alex. For those you struggling, please stay, we need you here.
