Growing up in the Boston area, the allure of the Boston Marathon is undeniable. It’s the ultimate symbol of determination, resilience, and community spirit. After becoming a runner at 38, it became a personal goal to run in this iconic race. My journey towards this dream has had its challenges. Despite achieving a qualifying time in 2012, I ultimately missed getting a spot by a mere 2 seconds. Then in 2015, I torn my peroneal tendon 22.5 miles into my qualifying race.

But, amidst setbacks, there’s always hope. Last year, I discovered Mass General Hospital’s charity team, and it sparked a new sense of purpose within me after losing my incredibly beautiful and courageous mom to metastatic cancer in September 2023. My mom’s 35-year cancer battle was one of courage and resilience. Throughout, she never lost her fighting spirit. In 2010, after she almost lost her life to chemotherapy complications, she joined my wife and me in Greece, where she completed her first 10K race in the original Olympic stadium while we completed our first marathon — a true highlight of our lives.

Through her battle, I witnessed the unwavering compassion and care provided by MGH’s oncology team. Their dedication to extending my mom’s life and easing her suffering was nothing short of remarkable and I will be forever grateful. Now, in what often seems like unbearable grief, I am determined to honor my mom’s memory in a meaningful way. By running Boston and fundraising for MGH’s Pediatric Cancer Center, I aim to turn my pain into hope. And I know that my mom, a retired elementary school nurse who dedicated her life to caring for children, would be proud to know her legacy lives on through this cause.
