In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Christine Mitchell
Age: 59
From: Boston

I joined Dana-Farber’s Marathon Challenge 2024 Boston Marathon team of 500+ to raise funds for lifesaving cancer research and to honor four heroes – family and dear friends who were diagnosed with cancer. My honored heroes are my mother Ann Dulles Joor, best friend and 9/11 widow Nancy Melvin Taylor, college roommate and teammate Doreen Gostin Stutzman, and dear running friend “Wonder Woman” Carol Chaoui.

This year’s event marks a personal milestone. It will be my 15th consecutive Boston Marathon as an athlete in the race’s Official Charity Program. My 2024 goal is to exceed $225K in career fundraising for cancer research. With less than a month to go, I am about $2K away. Also, I was one of about 5,700 stopped runners in 2013. April 15th will be the 11th anniversary of that tragic day. I believe that every dollar I raise and every step I run makes a difference. The goal? To get us closer to the ultimate finish line — a world without cancer.
