In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Mary Anne Pell
Age: 61
From: Phoenix, Ariz.

I’m running my 18th Boston Marathon at age 61 for Rebekah’s Angels, founded by 2013 bombing survivor Rebekah Gregory. I was making the turn onto Hereford Street in 2013, 1,000 yards away [when the bombing occurred]. While I was not physically harmed, I suffered from PTSD.

Gregory was three feet away. Her body took the full impact, but she shielded her young son, saving his life. She lost her leg and both she and her son suffered PTSD. Rebekah’s Angels provides mental health treatment and support for children suffering PTSD like her son.

Her charity rose from Boylston and created good from tragedy. So many helped me and others in 2013 that I want to give back as a thank you. Rebekah Strong! Boston Strong!
