Shane Sager is running Boston to give back to his community

"We can't be blind to the service we must give to those who need our help."

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Shane Sager
Age: 30
From: Boston

I’ve only been running for four years but I’ve been helping people since I was six years old. In 2000, My family started a foundation that traveled around to help people in third world countries and I have spent most of my life on the road. Today I play harmonica professionally with the artist Sting and have toured in over 50 countries over the last five years.

Being a touring musician gone nine months a year and balancing training for Boston has been a challenge, but it’s nothing compared to what challenges these kids face battling pediatric cancer. I saw this as an opportunity to help in whatever way I can to bring more light into these children’s lives.

I’m running Boston because we all must do our part to help our community, no matter the cost. I’m running Boston because theres no such thing as a free lunch. We can’t be blind to the service we must give to those who need our help. I’m running Boston because I can…but more importantly because I choose to help.
