Quyen Nguyen is running Boston in memory of her husband

"We truly lost an amazing husband, father, brother, son, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend."

Quyen Nguyen is running the 2024 Boston Marathon.

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Quyen Nguyen
Age: 44
From: Winchester

I am running the Boston Marathon this year in memory of my husband, Scott, who passed away from Stage 4 Stomach Cancer after a short 8-month battle at age 49. I hope to use this opportunity to raise stomach cancer awareness, spread the importance of cancer pre-screenings, and to support Mass General Hospital.

Scott tested positive for the H. pylori infection, which if left untreated, can develop into stomach cancer over time. This infection could have easily been treated with antibiotics, but pre-screenings for this infection are not routinely performed in the U.S. When symptoms start to present, the disease has likely developed into advanced cancer.

Scott was treated at the Mass General Cancer Center during his illness. The entire clinical staff at MGH — from the GI-oncology unit, nurses, infusions teams, inpatient teams, to the emergency department teams — all provided exceptional medical care with warmth and kindness during our many stays there.

We truly lost an amazing husband, father, brother, son, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend.
