Mike Kehoe is running Boston for family members touched by cancer

"My family’s history inspired me to fundraise for the pediatric cancer charity."

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Mike Kehoe
Age: 32
From: Boston

I’m running for my dad, John. As an avid marathon runner, he should have run Boston himself if we hadn’t lost him to leukemia 25 years ago. I’m also running for my 9 year old nephew, Austin. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018 and beat it like a superstar two years ago. Finally, I’m running for my 13 year old cousin, Kalista. She was diagnosed with glioma a few months ago and is currently inspiring all of us with her strength.

I’m an Active Duty Army Officer and Administrative Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital. I knew that I wanted to fundraise for the MGH pediatric cancer charity based on my family’s experience with cancer, but my mind was made up when I was given a tour of the pediatric cancer clinic and I saw the Boston Marathon finish line that they have printed on the floor. Is there a more important goal than getting every kid that walks into that clinic across the finish line? I don’t think so.

One of the things that motivates me the most about being on the MGH Marathon Team is that we collectively support three incredible charities. My family’s history inspired me to fundraise for the pediatric cancer charity. Beyond that, as an Army Officer I’m extremely proud of the work that Home Base does for veterans and the Emergency Response team does for our community. I’m honored to be a part of this team and I can’t wait for all of us to cross the finish line next month.
