Boston Marathon

Michele Gilbert is running Boston with her family to fight diabetes

"We are racing to show that anyone with Type 1 can conquer any challenge."

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Michele Gilbert
Age: 55
From: Narragansett, R.I.

My family of four adults — Michele (55), Jim (58), Madison (26) and Kendall (22) are running the Boston Marathon (for the first time) together to raise money for the Joslin Diabetes Research Foundation.

I have Type 1 diabetes, and we know that organizations like Joslin will find a cure in my lifetime. This insidious, chronic disease affects my daily life and the lives of my family in every single way.
