Boston Marathon

Michael McGee wants to run all six Major marathons

"Myself or a loved one may unexpectedly need these services and it’s great to see all the charity runners step up."

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Michael McGee
Age: 44
From: Waltham

I am running the 2024 Boston Marathon for quite a few reasons.

Firstly: to give back. I’m running for charity (Team MGH: Emergency Response) because I believe that I should contribute to the success of our world-class health providers in the area in which I live.

Myself or a loved one may unexpectedly need these services and it’s great to see all the charity runners step up to raise so much every year to help keep our emergency rooms fully prepared.

Secondly: the running communities! I run with multiple clubs in the city (Brighton Bangers, Notch Brewery: Meters for Liters and the Heartbreakers). I really benefit from the camaraderie and inspiration gained from sweating it out with peers that become friends over the course of a few miles.

It’s the perfect social environment for anyone looking to make lasting connections while working on overall health. Find those clubs online and run with me!

Lastly: for myself. I set a goal to run all six of the Major Marathons and so far I’ve run Chicago, NYC and I’m about to run Tokyo on March 5th 2024. Obviously, Boston is part of that and such an important goal as a runner in New England.

I’m beyond excited to run my first-ever Boston Marathon at 44 years old towards the back of the pack (party pace!) soaking in the energy all the way to Boylston Street!!
