Mark Sibold is running Boston for Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital

"This race is not just a personal triumph but a symbol of hope for those who, like me, have fought against the odds."

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Mark Sibold
Age: 27
From: Cambridge

On May 25, 2023, I was hit by a van that was traveling about 60 mph while I was cycling. The accident left me with critical injuries and little chance of survival.

After two weeks in the ICU, I arrived at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Through relentless determination and the unwavering support of my care team at Spaulding, I embarked on a miraculous journey of recovery. Their expertise and encouragement guided me through agonizing days. However, despite my gruesome injuries, I was acutely aware that I was rehabbing for a life of “normalcy,” while so many patients around me were not.

I’m running the 2024 Boston Marathon for the patients at Spaulding who can’t today, but may one day because of the care and important research in which Spaulding is engaged. I’m running as a testament to, and in gratitude for, what exceptional care, a supportive team of doctors, family, girlfriend, and friends, makes possible.

This race is not just a personal triumph but a symbol of hope for those who, like me, have fought against the odds. Each time I lace up my shoes, I see it as a chance to honor the tireless efforts of the Spaulding team and the generosity of my loved ones who never wavered in their belief in my recovery.
