Gary Abrahamsen is running Boston for an Abbott Six Star medal
"Everyone who gets to the start line at Hopkinton has a story to tell."
In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.
Name: Gary Abrahamsen
Age: 64
From: Camas, Wash.
Boston has become the ultimate culmination of a 24 year journey which started before I ran my first marathon in 2017, at the age of 58. Many runners have a personal story to tell, especially for anyone like myself going for their final Abbott Six Star medal. Running has helped me lose over 60 pounds. Running has helped me physically and mentally through two cancer surgeries and radiation treatment. I can even give running some credit for my 33 year marriage.
But why do I run Boston? Since 2018, when my wife first ran Boston, the spirit of “pay it forward” has been intertwined with running and Boston like no other city. Multiple serendipitous moments punctuated our experience that cold, wet, blustery day. And through all the Abbott World Marathon Majors that spirit of paying it forward was a constant theme. Six years, three continents, and multiple cities later, it seems fitting to come full circle and run Boston as a charity entry.
I am excited to support Health Imperatives and all the wonderful work they do. Family, friends, coworkers, and people I have never met until now, selflessly contributing to my effort to support Health Imperatives has been a humbling experience. And I have learned to turn the comments of those cheering me on into uplifting fuel to move me forward.
Everyone who gets to the start line at Hopkinton has a story to tell. Those stories often tell how even though we may run alone, we haven’t gotten here alone. I am running Boston to help others because of the others who have helped me. Come out April 15 and cheer for all the runners. Your support matters.
