In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.
Name: David Tuell
Age: 33
From: Winchester
The Boston Marathon is more than a 26.2-mile race for me. Born and raised in Massachusetts, I’ve dreamed of crossing the finish line for over a decade. The idea of family and friends cheering me on from the streets I’ve walked so many times gives me chills. I’m running my first marathon for Mass Mentoring Partnership to support my passion for youth development.
As a former Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sister Program for over a decade and a Board Member for Community Youth Empowerment, I am always looking for ways to support young communities across the state.
A few weeks ago, I found out I broke a rib while skiing, and moments after receiving the news, the only thought I had was that there was no chance this was going to stop me from running the Boston Marathon. I immediately thought of my mother who was recently diagnosed with cancer, and my father who was diagnosed with MS.
To see how they handle their struggles and still manage to keep a smile on their face is what inspires me to endure any pain that comes my way. They will be on my mind for the entire 26.2 miles. I run for them.
