In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Sarah Burke
Age: 24
From: Braintree

I am running this year‘s 2024 Boston Marathon in memory of my mom, Evanne Burke. I am honored to be running as part of the Ellie Fund, a breast cancer organization whose goal is to provide support to those battling. Not only does the Ellie Fund help with transportation, prepared meals, gift cards to local stores, and more, they create a sense of relief for the whole family.

The Ellie Fund helped my family when my mom was battling for her life. Although she fought hard, our best friend was taken from us Mother’s Day Weekend 2012. She was our everything. I was only 12 and my sister Elizabeth was 13 when our mom passed away at the young age of 44 years old.

To fundraise for an organization that once helped my family is so meaningful. I am more than happy to help raise money to support families in need. I know that heartbreak. I wholeheartedly believe the Ellie Fund is as amazing it is today because of the people who work there. We all have one passion, and that is to provide support to those who are fighting against breast cancer. I will simply never stop running in memory of my mom.
