Misty Hungerford is running ‘to give others more time with their loved ones’

"My heart chose to do this."

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Misty Hungerford
Age: 50
From: Aurora, Colorado

I lost my father to lung cancer last year, but before he died I told him I wanted to run the Boston Marathon to raise money for Dana-Farber, who treated him. I wanted to put the medal around his neck at the finish line. He usually thinks my running is silly, but not this time. Not for this. As we drove over the starting line in Hopkinton, right next door to where I grew up, he said, “That would be really nice.” I only hope where ever he is, he gets to watch me finish for him. My heart chose to do this, both for Dad and to give others more time with their loved ones.
