Why I’m Running: ‘If I can finish this, I can beat my cancer’

Chris Hatton is running the 2024 Boston Marathon in support of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Chris Hatton
Age: 56
From: Mountain Lakes, New Jersey

I am running Boston for two reasons. I’m running for Dana-Farber for cancer research, but I am also running to try and beat my own cancer for good.

I am currently undergoing treatment for recurrent prostate cancer. This is my fifth time fighting this disease. The treatment regimen is hard on your body and leaves you feeling weak and unmotivated. I needed to do some thing different so I challenged myself to run a marathon (first time at 56!).

I was born and raised in Massachusetts and decided Boston was the one. I have family and friends still in Massachusetts and I hope to inspire them and many to not let anything keep you down. If I can finish this I can beat my cancer.
