Age: 37
From: Ras Al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

Embarking on the 128th Boston Marathon, my journey is not just about covering the 26.2 miles ahead; it’s a narrative rich with transformation, perseverance, and the realization of dreams once deemed unreachable.

My name is Abdulla AlShehhi, a petroleum engineer, a father of four, and, surprisingly to many, a passionate long-distance runner. My running odyssey commenced in 2008, born out of a necessity rather than a pre-existing passion. Overweight and far removed from any sporting activity, I faced a crucial turning point during my university years. I made a solemn vow not to graduate until I had shed the extra weight that weighed heavily on both my body and spirit. This pledge marked the beginning of a transformative journey from struggling to run for a mere five minutes on a treadmill to embracing marathon running as a testament to the sheer will to persevere.

The spark for my marathon journey was ignited by the Ras Al-Khaimah (RAK) Half Marathon. An unplanned, reflective 14-kilometer run along Abu Dhabi’s picturesque corniche made me realize that my dream of participating in such esteemed events wasn’t as far-fetched as I once believed. That realization propelled me into the realm of competitive running, setting the stage for a pursuit that would redefine my life.

Over the past eight years, I’ve dedicated myself to achieving a goal that few dare to dream: completing the Abbott World Marathon Majors. As I prepare to run the Boston Marathon, I stand on the cusp of becoming the first Emirati to achieve this feat. This journey transcends personal achievement; it’s a beacon of inspiration for my nation, demonstrating the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to dream and persevere.

My participation in the Boston Marathon is a celebration of every step, every mile, and every challenge overcome in the pursuit of the Six Star Finisher Medal. It’s a tribute to the unwavering support of my family, the camaraderie of the running community, and a testament to the resilience within us all.

I run to inspire my nation and to show that with determination and heart, even the loftiest dreams are within our reach. My story is not just mine but a narrative of hope, endurance, and the transformative power of running, poised to inspire not just fellow Emiratis but individuals around the world.
