In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Chris Marino
Age: 54
From: Grafton

I will be running the Boston Marathon 499 days after surviving a widowmaker heart attack.

I had my heart attack on December 3, 2022, while out for a run. I had a bib for the 2023 Boston Marathon but had to forfeit it.

That winter and spring I was doing cardiac rehab, and when the cardiac rehab therapists asked what my goal was, I told my them that my goal is to run the marathon in April 2024.

They kind of laughed, but then saw how serious I was, and we got to work. Fast forward to today and I’m proud to say that I’m feeling great and training is going amazing! I just completed an 18 mile run this morning!

We utilize the marathon to raise funds and awareness for a rare genetic disorder (adrenoleukodystophy) that my 15 year old son has.
