In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.
Name: Adam & Anna Hennessey
Age: Adam, 49, and Anna, 20
From: Newton
My daughter Anna and I are running our first Boston Marathon together as part of Pine Street Inn’s team.
Philanthropy is woven into the fabric of our family. Our family has been involved with the Pine Street Inn for many years and we strongly believe in their mission to end homelessness.
We have volunteered at Pine Street Inn since our kids were little. Anna and her sisters would come with me on Sundays to serve lunch to the guests at Yawkey House, Pine Street’s women’s shelter.
This is the second Boston Marathon I’m running to support Pine Street Inn. Anna and I thought this would be a wonderful way to continue to support the organization.
Knowing that our run is raising funds for a cause that is close to our hearts makes this marathon special. Anna is a junior majoring in psychology at Villanova University and has always loved watching the Boston Marathon.
She’s excited to run her first marathon with me for Pine Street. Although we cannot train together because Anna is attending college, we still make time to motivate each other. We talk and text about our runs frequently.
As Anna likes to say, “It helps to know that someone else is working toward the same goal and going through the challenges of training for a marathon.”
Anna and I are running to help improve the lives of the individuals who rely on Pine Street for basic needs like food and shelter.
We’re happy to know that our run will help shine a light on the need for more housing and support for those experiencing homelessness.
