Name: Kevin O’Rourke
Age: 57
From: Easton

In April, I will be running the Boston Marathon in support of Massachusetts General Hospital, a cause that is deeply personal to me.

I am running in honor of my father, Brian O’Rourke. My dad was treated at Mass General Hospital in 1999 after being diagnosed with stage four cancer. Because of the extraordinary care and treatment he received, he was given an incredible gift: 26 more years of life. Those years allowed him to celebrate many milestones, create lasting memories, and meet and enjoy four additional grandchildren and a great granddaughter who may never have known him otherwise. My dad passed away in May of 2025. His legacy lives on in our hearts and memories and our family will be forever grateful for the care that extended his life.

This run is also deeply personal for another reason. I am a two-time cancer survivor myself, having been diagnosed and treated in 2019 and again in 2020. Crossing the starting line in Hopkinton will mark my first marathon since cancer, something I once wasn’t sure would be possible.

Before my diagnosis, running was a big part of my life. I’ve completed several marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 1997 and 1999. To return to Boston now, after cancer, running in support of the very hospital that gave my father and me more time, and that continues to give hope to so many families, feels incredibly meaningful.

As a middle school principal I do love what a marathon can show students and teachers. The goal, the work to prepare and the need for support from family and friends to make it happen.
