Boston Marathon

Can you solve our marathon word search faster than the lead runner runs?

Exercise your mind as we mark the 129th running of the Boston Marathon.

THE MARATHON:

Yes, running 26.2 miles (in a row) is “hard.” But if you think about it, isn’t exercising your mind just as challenging?

The answer, of course, is no, unless maybe you’re trying to solve cold fusion or something. But if you’re not one who’s prone to the kind of physical exertion the Boston Marathon requires, here’s a chance to take part in your own small way. (Very small.)

Below is the first-ever Boston.com Boston Marathon Word Search, featuring 26 marathon-related words and names for you to seek out (one for each mile, natch). If some of the words seem incongruous, never fear: Once you’ve found all 26 words, explanations for each of the entries will appear. Please note, though, that unlike in the marathon, with some of these, you’ll have to go backwards.

And if you really want to stick to the spirit of the day, set a timer and see if you can complete the puzzle in less than 2:06:17, the time it took last year’s Boston Marathon winner, Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia, to finish the race. (Extra points if you start on Monday right at 9:37 a.m., when the first group of elite runners takes off.)
