In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Johny Chau
Age: 34
From: Lynn

I am running the Boston Marathon through the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge where 100% of proceeds go toward the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I have been an oncology nurse for six years so oncology has a special place in my heart. Cancer research is so important, and I hope that one day we can find a cure and live in a cancer-free world.

Both my sister-in-law and uncle have been treated for cancer (breast cancer and lymphoma, respectively) and are in remission, which gives me hope, and hopefully others, that we can all conquer cancer together. All of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another, so I am not only running for my family, but I am running for my patients and their loved ones. This is my first ever marathon, and I will be thinking of all those affected by cancer throughout my run. In my everyday life, I always do my best to bring good energy and vibes, and I just want to shine my light to those around me. I hope to make everyone proud, and hope to reach my personal fundraising goal. Please consider donating to my fundraising page and send me all the energy during Marathon Monday!
