Boston bookworms, rejoice! Trident Booksellers and Cafe announced an expansion just in time for its 40th anniversary, the bookstore said on Tuesday.

The independent store on Newbury Street is known for its wide selection of books, events, gifts, and cozy atmosphere.

The new expansion “transformed” the entire second floor of the building, the announcement said. Now, the second floor of the shop will house more books, gifts, games, and a bigger section of discounted books.

The back half of the second floor has been transformed into “The Stacks,” a private event space. The expansion is part of the bookstore’s commitment to remaining a “cultural cornerstone” on Newbury, Trident said.

“We are excited to unveil this new chapter for the Trident,” said Courtney Flynn, co-owner of Trident. “Our goal has always been to create a space where people feel welcome to explore, connect, and celebrate. This expansion allows us to offer even more to our community while honoring the unique legacy that the Trident has built over the past 40 years.”

To celebrate its 40th anniversary on Oct. 5, the “third place” will host a free event in The Stacks open to everyone. The event, themed “Past, Present and Future,” will reflect on Trident’s history and the bookstore’s hopes for the future. According to the statement, event goers will be treated to a display of Trident memorabilia, refreshments, exclusive merchandise, and even free books. You can register for the event here.

“With its expanded space, enriched programming, and continued focus on community, The Trident looks forward to the next 40 years of books, conversations, and shared experiences,” the bookstore said.
