On Friday, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation unveiled a new website to help Worcester-area residents monitor pothole repairs.

The Pothole Repair Dashboard is aimed at offering real-time data on the progress of highway pothole repairs that fall within the Massachusetts Highway Division’s District 3.

Central Massachusetts residents can report a pothole’s size, location and the date it was spotted. Since early January, over 2,500 potholes have been reported.

“MassDOT’s use of the pothole repair pilot program allows highway personnel to make informed data-driven decisions when allocating resources for roadway maintenance and resurfacing,’’ said Highway administrator Thomas J. Tinlin in a statement.

“This is a great example of how MassDOT continues to use data and technology to help us make better decisions on infrastructure repairs and to provide accurate travel conditions to the public,’’ he continued.

The website also offers taxpayers the opportunity to track how much the department spends on repairs. Visitors to the Dashboard can click on a reported pothole to see the cost of repairs and the materials used to make the fix.

“This new tool will showcase how dollars are being spent and the progress being made,’’ said Tinlin. “The Highway Division prides itself on customer service and we believe this tool illustrates the daily efforts of our staff to provide safe roadways for the traveling public in a transparent way.’’

According to MassDOT, the website a “pilot’’ may be expanded to other parts of the commonwealth and could someday allow residents to access the information through a smartphone app.

MassDOT encourages residents to report potholes on state-owned roads to the Highway Call Center at 857-368-3500 or to email [email protected].
