Automotive research firm Edmunds.com announced its 2016 Best Retained Value award winners, recognizing 24 vehicles with the highest projected resale values over the next five years.

Toyota was the big winner this year with a total of five awards. Meanwhile, Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus joined Honda and Mercedes Benz, all of which took home three awards.

The awards recognized 2016 model year vehicles that are projected to have the highest projected resale value five years after their debut. The awards, now in their sixth year, are intended to help consumers determine what their car could be worth down the road should they decide to trade it in or sell it.

Vehicles start depreciating in value “the moment that you drive it off the lot,’’ said Carroll Lachnit, consumer advice editor for Edmunds.com The awards are meant to educate consumers about how much depreciation their vehicles could face over time.

“If shoppers are deciding between competing models, we advise them to see if any of the cars on their list earned a Best Retained Value Award,’’ said Lachnit in a statement. “This one simple step could bring them more money down the road when it’s finally time to trade in or sell their vehicle.’’

At the brand level, Edmunds.com recognized Toyota for the highest residual value in the non-luxury segment with a projected 53.8 percent residual value after five years. Acura was recognized as the top luxury brand for the fifth year in a row with a projected average residual value of 47.6 percent.
