IntelliChoice announces 22 Best Overall Value winners among 2016 cars
Consumer research firm IntelliChoice announced the winners of its 2016 Best Overall Value of the Year awards, recognizing 22 vehicles in different segments for offering low ownership costs.
IntelliChoice, which is owned by Motor Trend Automotive Group, reviewed new vehicle data based on information collected from automakers, the U.S. government, and third-party resources to determine a vehicle’s five-year cost of ownership.
The study looked at pricing, anticipated insurance fuel costs, depreciation, taxes and fees for nearly 2,300 vehicles to determine which ones offer the best deal for the money.
This year, Toyota took home the most prizes with seven awards collected among both its Toyota and Lexus brands. General Motors and Chrysler took three prizes each.

Lower gas prices were instrumental in helping several vehicles outperform their competition in terms of overall value.
“This year saw several new winners, as lower fuel prices increased the importance of strong resale values,’’ said Eric Anderson, IntelliChoice’s director of data products, in a statement. “The Jeep Wrangler, Wrangler Unlimited, and Porsche Cayenne were all rated Highest in Retained Value within their class and benefited from lower fuel prices.’’
Of the 22 winners, 16 were also received IntelliChoice’s SmartChoice awards for retained value. The SmartChoice awards are given to vehicles that perform strongly in one or more ownership cost areas. This year, the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab won the Best Overall Value Popular Vehicle for the highest retained value.
Meanwhile, the Lexus RX 350 won IntelliChoice’s Best Overall Value Premium Vehicle award.
