Thanksgiving traffic will be the worst on Tuesday, says Google Maps
“Sorry, Boston,’’ writes Google Maps about Tuesday’s traffic.
If you’re planning to travel by car Tuesday for the Thanksgiving holiday, think again.
A Google Maps report is warning Boston drivers to avoid the roads on Tuesday, the day holiday traffic will be the worst.
Google Maps looked at Thanksgiving traffic trends from 21 cities over the past three years and determined Boston is the only city where Tuesday is the worst day to travel via car (“Sorry, Boston,’’ says Google). Most cities experience their heaviest traffic day on Wednesday, according to the report.
If you absolutely must drive Tuesday, the worst time to hit the road is 5 p.m. — considered “the worst time for traffic across all of Thanksgiving week in Boston.’’ On Wednesday, Boston’s second-worst day to drive, you’ll want to get behind the wheel before 1 p.m. or after 5 p.m., since the heaviest traffic will take place between 3 and 4 p.m.
Bostonians can give thanks for turkey day traffic, which is the lightest of the week. But as you eye your return trip, think twice about driving on Saturday. That’s because Saturday’s traffic will be 20 percent worse than Sunday, says Google. Saturday is the third-worst travel day of the week in Boston.
But, overall, Google doesn’t think Thanksgiving traffic will phase Bostonians much, writing, “Boston’s Thanksgiving traffic was not much worse than its normal traffic. Of the 21 U.C. cities we looked at, Boston was ranked #17 for traffic during Thanksgiving week.’’
