U.S. News releases its ranking of the best vehicle brands of 2016
U.S. News & World Report revealed the winners of the magazine’s 2016 Best Vehicle Brand Awards. The magazine gave top honors to four automakers, each for excelling in a different major vehicle categories.
This year’s winners were Mazda, Honda, Ford, and Porsche.
“The U.S. News Best Vehicle Brands convey quality, experience and credibility, and can ease purchasing decisions when shopping for a vehicle,’’ said Jamie Page Deaton, managing editor of Best Cars at U.S. News, in a statement. Deaton also said the awards are intended to make car shopping a little easier for consumers.
“Consumers have an overwhelming number of factors to consider when comparing cars,’’ she said. “These awards help to simplify one part of the shopping experience by highlighting the top brands in specific vehicle categories.’’
To determine the winners, U.S. News combined the overall scores from its own Best Cars rankings on all models in each award class. The overall rankings are based on published reviews from the automotive press, plus safety and reliability ratings.
Here are how some of the winners’ individual vehicle models stacked up, and below the gallery is a breakdown of the awards.

Best Car Brand Winner: Mazda
Mazda took U.S. News’s top Car Brand prize for delivering an impressive lineup of vehicles that offer comfortable and “well-made’’ interiors.
Best SUV Brand Winner: Honda
Honda impressed reviewers with a strong lineup of comfortable, reliable, and family-oriented SUVs that rank at the top or near the top of their classes. This includes the midsize SUV, compact SUV, and subcompact SUV.
Best Truck Winner: Ford
Ford, the only U.S. automaker among U.S. News’s winners, won the best truck award category thanks to the performance of the F-150. According to U.S. News, the F-150 “continues to lead the evolution’’ of pickup trucks with a fuel-saving engine and high-tech connectivity.
Best Luxury Winner: Porsche
Porsche’s lineup has expanded recently to include the Panamera, the Cayenne, and the Macan. These vehicles have impressed critics by delivering on Porsche’s reputation for performance, luxurious interiors, and connectivity.
