Boston allows out-of-towners to appeal tickets via Skype

The City of Boston is offering visitors who received a parking ticket a chance to appeal their violation without appearing in person.

According to The Boston Globe, the city rolled out the virtual appeals process last month. Visitors to the Hub who found a ticket on their windshield may apply for a hearing on the ticket via Skype.

The Globe reports only five such hearings have been handled by the city’s parking office so far. All tickets appealed were dismissed.

Meanwhile, the online process has been received positively by city officials.

From the Globe:

“It is a little odd, because normally you’re across from somebody, and you can hand documents back and forth,’’ [Boston parking supervisor Stephen] Bright said. “But it’s very similar to the normal process. It’s just kind of doing it a little bit differently.’’

Motorists who appeal their parking violations have a strong chance of winning their appeals. According to the Globe, roughly 75 percent of parking tickets issued in fiscal year 2015 were dismissed after they were appealed.
