Tesla Motors plans to open a new store at the Shops at the Prudential Center, the company’s first store in the city and its third retail center in Massachusetts.

It’s unclear when the new store will open its doors. A Tesla spokesperson told the Boston Business Journal that Tesla will “host an ‘opening event’ in the next several weeks.’’

While it may sell cars, Tesla does not consider itself a traditional car dealership. Instead, its business model is focused on selling advanced electric car technology directly to consumers similar to how big stores like Best Buy and the Apple Store sell computers and smartphones.

Two other Tesla stores are located in Natick and Dedham. A service station is located in Watertown. The Boston Herald reports more retail locations will open in Massachusetts over the next two years.

It’s been a very good year for Tesla. Earlier this year, Consumer Reports was so impressed with the company’s Model S P85D that the publication was forced to adjust its scoring metric.

In September, the company unveiled the Model X, its all-electric SUV, which features “falcon wings’’ that open upwards.

Last week, the company released a software update called Autopilot, a feature that allows drivers to experience some of the benefits of self-driving car technology for the first time. According to Tesla, the feature (available in the Model S) combines input from the car’s “camera, radar, ultrasonics, and GPS’’ to deliver the first autonomous driving system.

Tesla also reports the Autopilot features collects data from these systems so that the technology “is continually learning and improving upon itself.’’
