Cars with a matte finishes, once reserved for the Hollywood elite, have recently become more popular among people, even reserved New Englanders, who just want their cars to stand out.

“I wanted something unique, but not too crazy,’’ Kris Brouillet, a service manager for Kia in Concord, New Hampshire, told The Boston Globe. “And I didn’t want any upkeep. This takes five minutes to clean.’’ [fragment number=0]

A matte finish is a treatment that gives the car less shine than traditional paint. It can be applied in the form of special paint, or as a wrap that goes on over the original paint.

As Cars.com mentions, a matte treatment does not need as much maintenance as regular paint, but if washed or treated incorrectly, you could end up with unwanted shininess or discoloring.

Brouillet decided to get his car wrapped after it was scratched on two different occasions. [fragment number=1]

And Brouillet is not alone. The owner of Northeast Auto Salon in Hudson, New Hampshire says matte finishes have propelled business at his five-year-old shop to triple every year.

Though a matte finish has its practical appeals, many of its early adopters were celebrities, such as Kanye West and Justin Bieber, who did it because it looks “hip and unusual,’’ according to the Globe.
