Driving in Boston is terrible, but at least the insurance is cheaper than this
There are many realms where Boston and New York compete against each other: sports, food, housing costs, and now car insurance rates.
But there’s no real competition here.
According to personal finance company NerdWallet, on average Boston car insurance rates are 60 percent lower than rates in New York City for the corresponding vehicles. The average car insurance rate in New York was a whopping $5,231 per year, while the average for Boston was $2,072.
NerdWallet looked at rate averages for 30-year-old single people who drive 5,000 miles per year, getting quotes from large insurers in 10 zip codes for each city.
For example, looking specifically at the Toyota Camry, New Yorkers pay an average $3,951, while Bostonians pay an average of $1,575 per year — a 60 percent difference.
NerdWallet attributes some of this spread to the fact that some courts in New York offer very high payouts for auto accidents.
Though Boston is better than New York for car insurance, it is still not great. Auto insurance rates in the Bay State are on the rise this year.
According to data NerdWallet gave to Boston.com back in May, the cheapest car to insure in Massachusetts was the Jeep Wrangler, while the Honda Accord and Honda Civic were the most expensive since they’re popular among young drivers.
