When it comes to buying a sports car, women preferred the new Ford Mustang to any other model this year, according to global sales data for the first half of 2015.

Mustangs comprised 36 percent of the entire female sports car market, global information company Polk/IHS reports. Bloomberg Business points out that Mustang sales are up in general – by 56 percent – selling 76,124 vehicles in the first half of 2015 alone. Sales among women were up 40 percent over last year.

Erich Merkle, Ford’s U.S. sales analyst, told Bloomberg women often chose Mustangs with 4-cylinder EcoBoost engines due to their fuel efficiency and reliable performance, calling the vehicles a “practical choice.’’ Merkle added that women were slightly more likely to buy convertibles than their male counterparts, with 15 percent of female Mustang buyers choosing drop-tops compared to 13 percent of men.
