The history of transportation, as this fun animation from The Atlantic shows, stretches all the way back to 8,000 B.C. when the canoe was first invented.

In the 1880s, the first gas powered car was invented, though it was little more than a motorized tricycle. That led the diesel truck, the race car, the monster truck, the ATV and eventually the self-driving car, first tested in 2009 by Google.

The video ends with hydrogen-powered cars, which are quickly becoming a reality. Just last week BMW brought its version to the test track. It looked significantly cooler than a motorized tricycle.
